What is SLD?

 

SLD(Specific Learning Disability) is a disorder in one or more of the psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, reading, writing, speaking, spelling, and mathematical calculation. Dyslexia is a type of SLD and it is the most common difficulty found in children. Learning disability is neurological malfunctions that limit the brain’s ability to understand, remember and communicate information. It is not just a difficulty in learning but a disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive, process store, and respond to information. It interferes with a person’s learning ability and consequently his/her functioning throughout life.

Reasons for SLD(Specific Learning Disability) :


The exact cause of dyslexia is not fully understood, but it is believed to be due to a combination of genetic and medical conditions. Learning disabilities have a vital genetic component, problems during pregnancy, birth, early infancy, and other general medical conditions. The reason is not clear.

 

Types of SLD(Specific Learning Disability) :

 

1) Dyslexia – This is a difficulty that deals with a person’s ability to read, write, and spell. Dyslexia is a condition that makes it hard to work with language, comprehension, and reading fluently.
2) Dyscalculia – Dyscalculia is a difficulty that deals with a person’s ability with math concepts, numbers, calculations, and solving math problems.
3) Dysgraphia – A person with dysgraphia will have learning difficulty in writing, handwriting, writing comprehension, grammar, and spelling.
4) Dyspraxia – This is a difficulty that affects movement and coordination and is a lifelong condition. To elaborate on difficulties in fine motor skills, graphomotor skills, balancing, and problems with attention.

Children with SLD need to :

  • Early Identification
  • Remedial classes
  • Counseling, both individually and with family
  • Continuous training in school and with a special educator

  • Constantly work with the special educator teacher

 

Having a learning disability does not doom a person to failure. Most individuals with learning disabilities do lead everyday lives, and many have been successful in their careers.
